First Grader is Most "Egg"-cellent !
Preston Payne, a first grader in Mrs. Jordan's class, had an "egg"-cellent Saturday morning, February 16, 2008. He won first place
in the car crash competition, and was interviewed by a reporter from WCBI-TV station (see interview). The interview was aired on the
10:00 p.m. news show Saturday night.
Preston had won first place in Mrs. Jordan's class competition last week, and his car lasted through seven rounds of rolling the same car with the same egg down an 8-foot ramp at increasing angles. After Preston and two students from other area schools made it to about 80-85 degrees, Dr. Cuicchi, a member of the judging team, elected to weigh the cars, with the lightest one being the winner. Congratulations to Preston!
First grade students from Mrs. Jordan’s class are (front l to r): Mary Katherine Munn, Isaac Buckner, and Preston Payne. Fifth grade students from Mrs. Bisson’s class are (back l to r): Tyler Blanton, Esther Kim, Rebecca Rendon, Nick Wylie, and Jordan Prather. Preston Payne won the overall first through third grade competition with his Mission Eggcellence K-nex car.

SCS Teachers Participated in CAVS Workshop!
Two teachers from SCS, Laura Jordan, (l)first grade, and Jennifer Bisson, (r)fifth grade, recently attended a Mission Eggcellence workshop at the Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems (CAVS) on the campus of Mississippi State University. They learned the basics of the physics and engineering aspects of a car crash and safety concerns. They designed and built bumpers and cars to compete with the other teachers for the safest design. They received equipment and lesson plans to teach to their students, and will return to MSU for student competitions to be held Saturday, February 16 at the Bost Extension Building.
Back in the classroom, Mrs. Jordan and Mrs. Bisson taught the lesson plans to their students, divided them into teams, and had them design and construct bumpers and cars for class competition. Two teams from each class will advance to the competition.
SCS Seventh Graders Participate in Duke TIP Program
Katie Carr (l) and Caleb Jordan (r) recently participated in the Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP). "
The Talent Search identifies academically talented 7th graders based on standardized test scores achieved while attending elementary or middle school.
Candidates are identified and invited to complete either the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT Assessment college entrance examination. Duke TIP then provides the participants with comparative information concerning their academic abilities and resources for unique educational opportunities."
(Duke TIP website)
Katie and Caleb took their ACT test and are looking forward to receiving their results and future participation in the TIP program. If you are interested in learning more about the program, go to the Duke TIP website.
SCS Sports Program Makes the News!
Here is an excerpt from the Point of View column Danny Smith, sports editor for the Commercial Dispatch, wrote on December 14, 2007:
"Everyone wants to win when it comes to sports. That's just natural.
At Starkville Christian School, there is more to what they are teaching than just winning or losing a basketball or softball game.
The small Christian school in Starkville is just starting a sports program and wants good character to be the focus on the athletic field or court.
Danny interviewed our headmaster, Mr. Witbeck, as well as our coaches, and produced a well written article that was very complimentary to our school. For the article, click here to go to the archived sports page, or click here to view a PDF of the article.
SCS Mascot Chosen
The faculty and students voted on a mascot and the winner was: The Starkville Christian School Cougars! Keep your eyes open for artwork and logos to begin appearing around the school.
